I am totally a beginner to gardening – every plant that I have tried to grow so far has died. So this year I moved to a house that has a garden area, and decided to make a huge project for myself! I am starting seeds today and diving head-first into the world of homesteading. I plan on growing all kinds of veg, fruit and flowers. During harvest time I will get a crash course on canning and storing food. Wish me luck!
Lets get right into it, shall we?
Today I took a trip to the garden center down the road and asked probably around a million questions. Hopefully I am not the only one that is completely clueless! The kind man who helped me let me know that I need to hold off on strawberries and flowers, because I can’t plant those outside until later in the spring, around late April or so. I ended up choosing to plant cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and mint. These I’ll be able to plant around march 10 or so.
My boyfriend saved some egg cartons for starting seeds (thanks Curtis!), so I went ahead and grabbed those and some potting mix to get started.

Here’s what I did:
- I sat down in the garage and filled them with soil.
- Then, I used a spray bottle to saturate them with water.
- Sprinkled some seeds, then covered the seeds with some dirt.
- Gently sprayed a bit more water and pressed down gently.

Where did I put the seed cartons?
Next to the window in a warm room in the house. Hopefully they will enjoy that spot! The sunlight is there but won’t scorch the delicate little leaves.

Check back in soon – there should be some lil sprouts coming up quick!
